Pregnant and in the hospital with excruciating rib and back pain. What is this and should pain killers be used?

if the doctor "thinks" it could be a gallbladder problem then they should run the approiate scans to find out for sure. giving morphine to any pregnant woman can be very dangerious as I had a miscarriage due to be given morphine. I would suggest as soon as she is able to take pills they should try tylenol #3 or vicodin as I had to take that in the past for the same problem. Because of hotmones and increased blood flow gallbladders like to mess with us women. I would suggest just try to deal with it and take pain meds as needed and wait till after birth so the baby is ok and then get her gallbladder removed.
