How long is a tour of duty in the United States Army?

And how long is a tour of duty in the United States Marines? I have been thinking of joining the Marines because I don't have enough money for college but I am getting good grades averaging 3.8. I've heard the army helps you financially through college but I think I have enough motivation to be a marine. Is Afghanistan dangerous?
